The Ethical Foundations of Economics: Beyond the Myth of Value-Free Social Science

Abstract:

This paper challenges the prevailing claim that economics and other social sciences can or should be “value-free”—a notion rooted in Western positivist, materialist, and utilitarian philosophical frameworks. These frameworks, by excluding ethics from theory and policy formulation, have produced a legacy of dehumanizing, coercive, and often destructive systems. The result is an academic and policy tradition that enables fraud, force, and exploitation under the veneer of scientific neutrality. Africonomics offers a human-centered alternative: a principled approach that affirms the centrality of truth, justice, and nonaggression in human relations and institutions. Instead of treating humans as mechanistic, amoral actors, Africonomics recognizes the dignity, agency, and ethical discernment inherent to human nature. This paper demonstrates that ethical foundations are not only compatible with scientific rigor but essential to it. Without them, economics becomes pseudoscience, and its models lead to systemic injustice, economic disarray, and social decay. An ethically grounded economics, aligned with natural-moral law, can fulfill its proper purpose of advancing justice, prosperity, and peaceful human relations within and among societies. Africonomics provides the philosophical and moral foundation for such an approach and charts a transformative path forward for African nations and the world.
